This cultural difference can kill your offshore project
Radical Candor is hard to outsource
It may seem as if offshore and onshore developers are essentially the same thing. And in many ways they are. Both may write code to the same standard. Both may communicate with a high standard of English. Both may deliver on time. However, in countries like India and South East Asia it’s culturally not recommended to challenge figures of authority. Especially if that figure of authority is a westerner with massive power of the worker’s livelihood. In America you may be used to a culture of constant feedback across entire orgs for the common good. No matter how encouraged this might be it is not as common in Asia. This can seem benign but can have disastrous consequences. Constant product and technical feedback is something that is critical to the success of Software Projects. If you don’t have someone to keep you accountable and steering towards your business goals your offshore teams will keep building features indefinitely with no pushback on how they fit into the bigger picture.
