The best way to learn is by doing. There’s still a place for traditional academic learning. But when learning a new skill the best approach is to
Plunge in at an appropriate level.
Get data about where the gaps lie.
Use that data to narrow focus.
It’s also a completely different experience to learn theoretically than to carry it out, and elements that would be unimportant to most may be crucial to the individual.
Random example—enunciation in public speaking. If somebody had an unusually thick accent that would be a priority. Whereas for a local it wouldn’t. And if it were coming up to that person’s thirty third birthday and they pronounced it “tirty-turd” or they started a business called Finest City Digital and then realized they pronounced it “FinesCihyDidgetul” they would be especially motivated.
