Southern California and Ireland have a lot in common. Both border major oceans, leading to strong surf and water cultures, and both are extremely laid-back.
There’s one key difference. Southern California combines that easygoing vibe with a deep-rooted sense of optimism.
For all its recent economic growth, Ireland is still working on a positive outlook. Small businesses are popping up everywhere. Many friends have started their own ventures, often with support from programs like “Lean Launch”. But beyond that early push, you're on your own. Venture capital is extremely rare in Ireland, and taxes on entrepreneurs are punishingly high.
More subtly, there’s a cultural resistance to risk. If you tell someone you’re starting a business, you’ll likely get the response, “Be careful” or worse, “You’re an awful eejit for trying.”
There’s so much to love about Ireland’s laid-back lifestyle. But I can’t help wondering how far things could go if we borrowed just a little of that American belief that maybe, just maybe, this crazy idea could work.
