[Jargon Buster] Authentication vs Authorization

Two syllable differences matter

The difference between Authentication and Authorization is confusing. Let’s explain with the analogy of a Hotel with a Key Card system.

Authentication

Key card owners entering the elevator become authenticated. That means their access to the hotel has been approved. Once their stay is up their access is revoked.

Authorization

The specific floor and room the guest can access.

Authentication is a precursor to Authorization. Authentication is the ability to access what you’ve been authorized for.
